Peer review

The South West Expert Reference Group for Dementia Care in Hospital and the clinical leads for dementia in general hospitals will be facilitating a second review in the South West between December 2012 and February 2013. The review will reflect, and mark a strengthening of local leadership for dementia care, and build on the learning and positive practice from the Peer Review 2011/12.

The review will focus on the eight standards for dementia care in hospital, taking stock of progress, identifying positive practice and sharing expertise in order to address challenges and areas for improvement. It will be a learning and development process which seeks to recognise, facilitate and promote improvement in dementia care in hospital. The approach for the review is based on hospital to hospital visits and will enable inquiry and learning to be customised to the needs and wishes of hospital teams.

Introducing the peer review, Alison Moon, Chief Nurse for University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and South West Champion for Dementia Care in Hospitals stated;

“I am sure that a second Peer Review visit, to appraise progress and positive practice, and a hospital-to-hospital method will be very worthwhile and that there will be a great deal of learning for us all.

The Expert Reference Group together with the trust representatives were keen to maintain traction and local momentum and this should set trusts up well going forward as part for their local dementia partnership boards.

I shall be following closely how the Review is going, and I look forward to our regional conference in March where we will be consolidating and celebrating this work.”

During the review, examples of positive practice will be gathered and will result in a revised edition of the Compendium of Positive Practice.
