Dementia friendly communities

Dementia friendly communities involve groups of people who are working together to promote living well with dementia. This can be people living in villages or cities and working together in organisations.

Dementia friendly communities are focussed on improving the ability of people with dementia to remain independent and have choice and control over their lives. They can prevent people living with dementia from being admitted to hospital inappopriately and offer alternatives to living in care homes for people living with dementia.

Alzheimer’s Society dementia friendly communities programme

The dementia friendly communities programme was launched at the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia 2012 conference. Through the programme, the Alzheimer’s Society aims to give public recognition and support to villages, towns, cities and national organisations who are taking steps towards being more inclusive of people with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society also want villages, towns, cities and organisations across the UK who have not yet started on this journey to get in contact so they can find out more information.

The Alzheimer’s Society is working on building evidence to inform the future of the dementia friendly community programme. Whether from places already taking action or from communities seeking more information, the Alzheimer’s Society want to hear from villages, towns, cities and national organisations across the country.

Getting involved
If you are an organisation or from a community interested or already taking action, please email the Alzheimer’s Society at [email protected] to find out more information or share what progress you have already started to make.

Dementia Action Alliances

The dementia friendly communities programme will be closely intertwined with the establishment of local dementia action alliances. Local dementia action alliances will be groups of stakeholder organisations who have come together to improve the lives of people with dementia. These local alliances will be supporting and engaging with the development of dementia friendly communities.
